Baby Cows!

It is calving season on the farm and our friendly neighbors let us "cuddle" some baby cows. They have 10 of the 45 expected babies, with one death so far due to the extreme cold weather we've been having. It has been a rough calving season for the farmers out here as they need to get the new born calves inside and warm asap in this cold. The sad reality is that several will die in each herd as the cows will not wait for daylight or birth in convenient places. Drew & his Dad take shifts, every two hours through the night in -30 checking for new babies and had to take 3 calves into the heated porch of his parents house the other night to keep them warm. Thankfully it is a short season. Ths kids sure enjoyed traipsing among the babies, who were a little skittish with all the commotion.

Liam and Daisy - not all the calves get names so she is special

Bryan thought "Steak" would be a better name

Katie got a little closer than Liam, she doesn't move so fast and is a little more patient

Momma cow was happy to be reunited with her babies. Drew used a hockey stick (just to put distance, not to harm) to get between the protective Mommas and the calves so we could visit. The Mommas stood outside the barn calling to the babes.

eThe cows are right next to the house in calving season for early access to check on them throughout the night.

Up close and personal with #9 - red tag means a boy

This baby has the cutest curly fur! White tag means a girl.
