Happy November, so hard to believe that 2009 is almost over! On Tues Liam was officially 9 months old. It is crazy to me how fast those 9 months have gone by and looking back at pictures from when he was born I realize how he really is growing into a little boy. He is certainly still a (my) baby but his is losing some of those baby looks. He had a checkup on Tues and has gained virtually no weight this past month, weighing in now at 19.5lbs, but he has grown an inch - 29.5 inches long. Long and lean little man...the rolls are thinning out.
It is no wonder to me that he has not gained weight as he never stops moving around, even when he is happily having a snuggle (which he quite enjoys) he is wriggling. And when you put him on the floor beware....EVERYTHING is fair game to him. I have found him belly surfing on the lower level of our end table trying to reach the air vent behind it, or the cord for the lamp, or whatever has rolled back there on the floor. He has discovered the dogs water and food dishes in the laundry room and as if they weren't already displaced enough they can no longer get a drink whenever they feel like it as that door must be closed or else the floor is getting washed several times per day. He has learned the skill of sitting himself up and is quite proud of this. It has made nap times a little more challenging as he apparently feels that his crib is a safe place to practice acrobatics - not that you can blame him as the rails do keep him contained and the mattress provides a soft landing. He continues with his commando crawl but is getting up onto his knees and rocking now. He is not fond of standing - when you stand him in your lap he'll stay for 10-15 secs and then collapse to his bum. This, along with a watch on his feet at birth and family history (me) of having club feet did prompt us to discuss a possible need for assessment of his feet with our GP. He agreed that an consult with an orthpeadic specialist would not go astray, although he was not urgently concerned with his development. We asked to have him referred to Katie's orthopod and actually had him seen by Dr. Kiefer today (just good luck) while Katie was in the clinic. He is not concerned with his feet at this time. He told us that it is very hard to determine deformity, unless it is obvious, in babies under 12 months. He advised us to keep an eye on them and his development and call his office for another appointment within the year if we have further concerns.
I can not relate to you all how much he loves his big sister - thank goodness as she really puts him through the ringer at times (he'll definately be a tough little guy). He just lights up when she is around and he can play with her for endless periods of time. I enjoy it too expect for her bossiness and acting like she is his mother (I know you are laughing Mom). She pulls and drags him around the floor like a rag doll and he just looks up at her with adoration, more often than not giggling away.
As mentioned Katie had follow-up today at the cast clinic the Dr. Kiefer. The good news, her x-ray looked good - you could see the bones were much closer together and healing is well on its way. The bad news - 3-4 weeks above knee cast and then another 2-3 weeks below the knee cast for a likely total of 6 weeks (we had thought total of 4 and 2-3 above knee). She is not supposed to put weight on it but one cannot realstically expect her not to try, this is why they will not shorten the cast until 3-4 weeks post fracture. She is trying to walk on it and has walked up and down the stairs several times since last night. Generally though tthe bum scoot is her main mode of transport. We tried dance class this week and it went fairly well, except that she had a tough time when she could not do things. I think next week she will have to stay home as she was quite a distraction to the other girls with me having to be in the room. After dance I was exhausted, as was she, so we gave playschool a miss this week. We will however go there next week, I think it will be easier for her there as she won't have to sit out of as many activities. It is certainly a challenge for all of us - unless both Bryan & I are going out with the 2 children we can't go far as we can't carry them both at the same time. Mom and our family friend Linda are here for this weekend and 1/2 of next week and I must say I will be happy to have them around as my errands are piling up & won't get accomplished this weekend due to Justin's wedding. She is in good spirits. although a few more tanturms due to being sore and tired, and frustrated at times. It is hard for us to tell at times how much pain she is in versus how tasty the pain meds are...but given she is trying to do a little more each day I am sure by the end of the day she is sore. She goes back to the clinic on Nov 19 for her next follow-up and fingers crossed will get a below-knee cast at that time.
