On Friday night Katie had her first skating lesson of the season and fell.....breaking her right leg! She broke her tibia and is in a cast to her hip. She has been a trooper, although it is all new and exciting to her at this point, I am sure it will get old fast. I wans't there at the time but Bryan says she fell, didn't cry, scream, or even say ow - just that she wanted to go home. After 3 hours of her refusing to put weight on the leg and some serious swelling despite ice I made the call into work to see how busy it was. I DID NOT want to have to take her in due to the flu craziness and wait times, but what can you do? Luckily it was not too busy and one of the few perks to my job is that I do get to jumo the line at times for treatment. We thought she had just sprained it, it most certainly is broken. Luckily we didn't try to force her to walk on it as the break was not 100% through the tibia (large bone in the lower leg) so it was not displaced - had she walked on it it likely would have ended up displaced and been more serious. We anticipate she'll be in a cast for about 4 weeks, but they may shorten the cast to below the knee after 2-3 weeks depending upon how it is healing. Her knee is flexed at 30 degrees so she will notbe able to walk properly, but they assure us she will eventually figure out how to walk (on her toes) as the pain subsides. Right now she is doing a bum scoot on the floor. Let me tell you she is a heavy little devil and at this point I wish we lived in a bungalow as 2 flights of stairs get old fast!
We have followup at the Children's hospital at the end of this week or early next week. And I'll up date then. In the meantime, skating lessons are out, dance class is questionable - she'll particpate as much as possible on one leg and I'll likely have to go to school with her to help her around. She went trick or treating in a wagon and will go down the aisle at Justin's wedding in it too! It is going to be a long month I am sure, as we will be quite house bound with 2 children to carry around - so playdates will be welcome for those of you close by!!
